Obituary

Steven (Steve) Lewis Reed, 69, of Madison, Virginia passed away on January 11, 2023 at his home. He was born in Brookville, Pennsylvania on June 5, 1953 to James and Margaret (Moore) Reed. He spent his childhood in and around Clarion, Pennsylvania and St. Clairsville, Ohio playing ball--be it football, basketball, or baseball. He graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1971. Steve met and married his devoted wife, Judy (Klingerman) Reed, in Clarion in 1977. They spent the next 45 years together in Virginia where they raised two children. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his brother David Reed; his fur buddy Gibbs; and many members of his extended family. He is survived by his wife; his children, Kecia Lettington and her husband Craig, and Shane Reed and his partner Veronica; his grandchildren, Logan, Aubrey, Marie, and Henry; and his cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their families. Steve passed on to his children a passion for music, sports, hiking, and camping. He instilled in them a strong work ethic, determination, and a genuine acceptance and respect for others. It was Steve's pleasure in later years to read to children during story hour at the local library. His years participating in Rock Steady Boxing with Coach Jojo allowed him to be the athlete in his mind and hit back against both Parkinson's and cancer. Steve was a resilient man who kept his sense of humor until his last days. He lived by Jimmy V's motto of "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." He often quoted the lyrics "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile." Steve left this world as he lived--on his own terms. The family appreciates Steve Wagner and Blackie Watts' steadfast friendship. They would also like to thank Dr. Erika Struble, all the nurses, and the staff at MJH Cancer Center for their compassionate care over the last decade. Please consider a memorial donation to Mr. Steve's Fund at the Madison County Library (402 N. Main St. Madison, VA 22727) or Rock Steady Boxing (rocksteadyboxing.org, 7440 N Shadeland Ave, Ste 202, Indianapolis, IN 46250). An online guestbook is available at www.compassionatecremationva.com Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, VA is handling the arrangements.
