Obituary

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley Ruth Moore, 97, of Stanardsville, VA, entered into her eternal rest on March 15, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. She was born November 11, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband & the love of her life, Warren Moore; her beloved son, John Starcevich; her mother, Lillian Mitchell; and siblings, Kenneth Mitchell of Miami, FL, Michael Mitchell of Kissimmee, FL, Phil Patton of Miami, FL, Joan McNamara of Keiver, OR, Charlotte Adamson of Brooksville, FL, and Karen Hohl of Forreston, IL. Shirley is survived by one daughter, Janet Heckethorn of Stanardsville, VA; granddaughter, Kristen Brown & husband, David of Ruckersville, VA; and two great-grandchildren whom she adored, Kyle and Emily Brown of Ruckersville, VA. Shirley was a homemaker and an incredible lady remembered for her kind and loving nature. She had a heart of gold with a witty personality & strength within her that inspired all who knew & loved her. She lived a simple life on Saddleback Mountain in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Stanardsville, VA, for over 45 years. She & Warren fell in love with the mountain and the area's peaceful beauty after his retirement following a busy government career. She loved the mountain and the home they built together with all of her heart. Her daughter, Janet, has selflessly devoted the last few years of her life to caring for Shirley's needs battling dementia, and ensuring she could remain where she was most comfortable, as promised. You never heard Shirley complain, and asking for help of any kind was difficult for her. She was fiercely independent and always looked at situations in a positive light. Shirley loved gardening & working in her yard. She was a huge animal lover, including tending to a small farm on their property in her younger years. Every cat or dog she owned was a stray that found its way to her. Some of her granddaughter's fondest childhood memories are those spent alongside her helping to care for the animals. Shirley was known to love a good sweet treat, and she'd opt for the dessert before the meal any chance she could. Apple pie was amongst one of her favorites. She was an exquisite seamstress, artistic, and had a passion for small building projects. There was always a notepad with sketches of a material list that was needed in order to finish her latest project. Her granddaughter, Kristen, and great-grandchildren, Kyle and Emily, brought her great joy. We will forever treasure the fact that she was our Grammy, and the bond & memories that we shared with her will live on in our hearts forever. In accordance with her wishes, a service will not be held. We would like to extend our great appreciation to Hospice of the Piedmont in her final days. A memorial contribution may be made in her honor to either, Hospice of the Piedmont, The Dementia Society of America, and/or the Greene County SPCA. Go rest high on that mountain, Grandma; your work here on earth is done. - Vince Gill An online guestbook is available at www.compassionatecremationva.com Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, VA is handling the arrangements.
