Shirley Jane Herring, 85, of Stanardsville, VA, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Hospice of the Piedmont Center for Acute Care in Charlottesville, VA. She was born on June 19, 1937, in Amherst, VA to the late William and Josephine Viar. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved the beach, country music, dancing, card games, movies and enjoying time with family. She is survived by her children, Dale Payne, Richard Herring (Marguerite), Don Herring (Denise) and Penny Klemens (Joe); her daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Herring; grandchildren, Tyler Payne (Ashley), Samuel Payne (Kristen), Matthew Herring (Christina), Adam Herring (Lizzy), Devin Herring, Danna Herring, Amber Gentry and Cory Gentry; her great grandchildren, Breslin Benedetto-Payne, Brycen Payne, Brody Payne, Braylon Herring, Braxton Herring, Bailey Trevillian, Scarlett Wood and Kai Jackson; her siblings, Roy Viar and Nancy Woodson; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Herring; her son, Mark Herring; her sister, Mary Groah; three brothers, Jessie Viar, "Pete" Viar and Ernest Viar; and stepfather, Charles Camden. The family would like to acknowledge the Hospice of the Piedmont for the compassion, commitment, support and care that they provided for Mom and Dad during the past several years. Special thanks to Lee, Case Manager, Morgan, Social Worker, Heena, Chaplain and to all of Mom's "Special Ladies." The Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) and Greene County Habitat for Humanity also provided valuable information, resources, and services during this difficult time.
