Obituary

Sally Jean Pomfret, 76, of Orange, VA, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Friday, May 2, 2025, at UVA Culpeper Hospital. She was born on May 8, 1948, in New Cannon, CT, to the late Henry and Mildred Butler. Sally had a love for all animals. Before moving to Virginia, she managed a veterinary hospital in Connecticut. In 1985 she and her late husband David Pomfret bought Oakland Farm in Unionville. Sally spent many years working at Tucker Veterinary Hospital in Orange. She later went on to manage Mountain Run Kennel, and eventually became the owner and operator of her own business, Oakland Kennel. Oakland became known for its shooting preserve which hosted the National Pheasant Hunting Championships. She and Dave were committed to increasing the popularity of the little know Hungarian Vizsla and went on to breed champion Vizslas, Pointers, and Springer Spaniels. Later Oakland became known for its racetrack and hosted the Northern Virginia Rally Cross and other events. The track was also used as a test track for international race cars. Over the years Sally bred Bengal cats, saved the lives of orphaned squirrels, and spoiled her collection of chickens, ducks and turkeys. She was a discerning collector of oddities and memorabilia, had a reputation for generosity and children's pool parties, and was a devoted member of the Freedom Community Church. She will always be remembered for her joyful spirit and love of laughter. We'll miss seeing her walk in with her vibrant purple hair and unique bohemian flair. Sally is survived by her son, James Pomfret and his partner, Tami Steighner; her sister, Judy Gilroy and her husband, Thomas; her two nephews, David Cogswell and his wife, Tina, and Chris Cogswell and his wife, Rose; and her adopted daughter, Leighann Raines. She was the adopted grandmother to Court Raines, Chad Steighner, Becca Steighner and Wade Shifflett. Her friends are too numerous to mention. A Celebration of Life may be announced at a later date. An online guestbook is available at www.compassionatecremationva.com Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, VA is handling the arrangements.
