Obituary

Phillip James McMullen, affectionately known as “Jim,” passed away peacefully at his home in Esmont, Virginia, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. He was born on April 12, 1943, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the late Bernard and Grace McMullen.

Jim spent his early years in New Jersey, living in Elizabeth, Lakewood, Colts Neck, and Rahway, where he attended the local high school, before eventually making Central Virginia his home.

Jim was truly a man of many trades and talents. Over the years, he worked in a variety of fields, but he was especially proud of his more than 20 years of service as a landscaper at the University of Virginia, where he helped shape and care for the beauty of its historic grounds. Skilled with his hands and creative at heart, Jim was also a blacksmith, farrier, and woodworker, crafting with patience and precision.

His greatest passion, however, was the equestrian farm he owned and operated alongside his beloved wife, Patricia. Nestled in the rolling countryside of Esmont, the farm was more than a home. It was a reflection of Jim’s love for nature, hard work, and the quiet beauty of the land. He found deep joy in caring for the property, the horses, and sharing that peaceful setting with those he loved.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia McMullen; his son, Kevin McMullen; and his siblings, Mary Lou and Paul McMullen.

A celebration of life to honor Jim will be held later this spring for family and friends.
