Patricia “Patti” D. O’Donnell, 67, of Oak Park, VA, passed peacefully and surrounded by friends on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at her home. She was born on April 3, 1958, in Charlottesville, VA to the late William E. O’Donnell and Peggy D. O’Donnell.
Patti lived a life rooted in hard work, open fields, and the steady rhythm of hooves against the earth. Horses were not simply a passion, they were her life’s calling. As a devoted equestrian trainer, she spent decades riding, training, and working horses for farms throughout her community. Her knowledge, patience, and natural connection with animals earned her deep respect among fellow horsemen and friends alike.
She felt most at home when outdoors. Whether she was horseback riding across a pasture, bush hogging a field, cutting wood, or tending to the daily demands of farm life, Patti embraced the physical work that many would shy away from. She was tough and remarkably strong, meeting every challenge head-on with grit and determination.
But beyond her strength was a soul defined by kindness and generosity. Patti was the kind of person who showed up without being asked, who lent a hand without hesitation, and who consistently put others before herself. She worked harder for those she cared about than she ever did for her own comfort, giving freely of her time, energy, and heart.
Her life was one of purpose, resilience, and quiet compassion. She leaves behind a legacy of service, and love for the land, for her horses, and for the many lives she touched along the way.
Patti is lovingly remembered by her dear friends, Jennifer Sanders, Shelly Verling, and Laurel Jones; her special cousins, Jay O’Donnell, Jesse O’Donnell, and Garry Neufeld; her beloved dog, Jack; as well as many extended cousins, family members, and countless friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved cousin, Jon O’Donnell, who held a special place in her heart and whom she adored dearly; as well as her aunts and uncles, Robert and Page O’Donnell and Hugh and Iva Weaver.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2394 Mt Zion Church Rd, Oak Park, VA 22730, with Pastor Jeff Tucker and Pastor Gary Utz officiating.
A celebration of Patti’s life will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the Dixon homeplace on Lillards Ford Road. Directional signs will be posted along Oak Park Road and Lillards Ford Road to guide guests.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Gail Hayes, Laurel Jones, and Hospice of the Piedmont for the loving care they gave Patti.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, hopva.org/give
