It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Patrick Joseph Cooney, Jr., an extraordinarily kind, compassionate, and crazy-smart human being on June 14, 2026.
He was born on September 3, 1952, in Bethesda, MD Naval Hospital to Patrick and the late Mildred Cooney. In 1972 he married Peggy. After serving six years in the US Air Force, he started his career at Sperry Marine, retiring after 37 years. During that time, he was fortunate to travel to England, Norway, Mexico, Japan, and other countries.
While working and raising three daughters, Patrick earned two Associate degrees from Piedmont Virginia Community College and a Bachelor of General Studies degree from James Madison University in 1988.
Patrick was brilliant. He could fix anything from rebuilding engines to designing and building a two-story garage; there wasn’t anything he didn’t know or couldn’t do. He was always available and willing to help his family, friends, and neighbors. His gardening expertise is evident in his beautifully landscaped property.
Patrick will be treasured and remembered by so many. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; three daughters, Holly, Kerry, and Shelby (Michael); his father, Patrick (Peggy); siblings, Carolyn (Thomas), Daniel (Margaret), John (Terri), Kathleen (Mick), and Brian. Patrick was especially vital in the lives of his grandsons, Christopher, Asher, and Andre; and his nieces, Crystal and Tiffany.
Patrick was predeceased by his mother, Mildred, and his brother, Stephen.
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent service provided by Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, and Hospice of the Piedmont. A very special thanks and much love to Dave and Darla Low.
