Linwood Manis Shifflett Jr., affectionately known as “June June,” passed away at his home on October 1, 2026.

June June was born on December 6, 1959, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was a quiet man, but those who knew him understood that he never needed many words to make his presence known. There was a strength about him that could be felt simply by having him near. He had a calmness about him, a steady presence, and a kindness that made him a soft place to land for the people who loved him.

June June was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting, the countryside, and the simple life that came with being close to the outdoors. He was happiest in the places and surroundings that felt like home to him.

By profession, he was a painter, and he took great pride in his work. He was known for his expertise, patience, and meticulous attention to detail. Whatever he put his hands to, he did with care. He was also a gifted craftsman whose ability to build and create seemed to come naturally. If something could be made, repaired, or built, June June had a way of figuring it out.

In years past, June June was an avid bodybuilder and a member of the Stanardsville Barbell Club. His dedication to the sport earned him numerous accomplishments throughout the years, including first place in the Strongman Competition in 1990. His achievements were remarkable, particularly for a man of his small stature, but anyone who knew him knew that his size never defined his strength.

Still, it was not his accomplishments that those who loved him will remember most.

They will remember his quiet nature. His steady presence. His generosity. His willingness to lend a hand without expecting anything in return. They will remember that he could say very little and still somehow say enough. He was a man who showed his love more through what he did than through what he said. June June had a way of making people feel that they had somewhere to go and someone they could count on. He was a protector, a helper, a craftsman, and a friend. He was simply June June—and to the people who loved him, there will never be another quite like him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Linwood M. Shifflett Sr., and his nephews, Vince Shifflett and Chris Frazier.

Left to cherish his memory are Jackie Shifflett of Gordonsville; his two nieces, whom he helped raise, Jamie Frazier of Gordonsville and Krystal Dudley of Boonesville; and their children, Presley Frazier of Harrisonburg, Mackenzie and Hayleigh Dudley of Boonesville, and Brooklynn Dudley, with whom he resided.

He is also survived by his brother, Leroy (Kim) Shifflett of Earlysville, and their daughter, Stacey Shifflett; his sister, Diane (Arthur) of Dyke, and their children, Jason and Jamie “Red” Shifflett; and his sister, Rita Shifflett of Earlysville, and her children, Hunter and Jessica. He also leaves behind his mother, Charlotte Shifflett of Earlysville.

June June will also be deeply missed by his dear friends, James Shifflett, John Shifflett, Leon Beasley, and Glen Shifflett; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved feline companions, Dexter, Oreo, and Dylan.

Though he lived a quiet life, June June left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Some people leave behind many words, but June June leaves behind memories of a strong man with a gentle heart, a helping hand, and a presence that could never be mistaken.

He will be missed more than words can say, but he will remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
