Obituary

John Lewis Dyer, 81, of Orange, VA, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. He was born on June 13, 1944, in Chester, PA to the late Joseph Wheeler Dyer, Sr. and Mildred Giles Wensel. John was a man of immense faith, devoted to his Lord, his family, and his church. A longtime member of Community Baptist Church, he served faithfully as a Deacon, always leading with kindness, humility, and love. His famous words, "Put Jesus first and have a blessed day and everything will be alright," were a true reflection of how he lived his life, centered on faith and encouragement for others. John cherished time spent with his loved ones and found joy in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and a good meal shared with family and friends. The mountains always called to him, and he loved the peace of open road travel, where he could take in the beauty of God's creation. At the heart of John's life was love, faith, and service. His devotion to the Lord never wavered, and his words and actions left an enduring impact on everyone blessed to know him. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Dyer Thomas (husband, Glenn); his son, David Lewis Dyer (wife, Donna); his sister, Mary Alice Wensel; his grandchildren, Emily Lou Dyer, David "DJ" Dyer, Colleen E. Dykstra (husband, Clayton); his great grandchildren, Knox L. Dyer, Kove L. Dyer, and Harvey W. Sutphin, Jr.; and a special friend, Jodie Velasco.
