Jie Zou

Jie Zou, 61, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family, on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born on April 5, 1965, in Neijiang, China to the late Hehai Zou and Lirong Zhang.

Jie was born and raised in a small town outside of Neijiang in China's Sichuan Province. The sixth of seven children, he was surrounded by the love and care of a close-knit family. At the age of eleven, after the heartbreaking loss of his father in a car accident, Jie moved to Chengdu to live with his aunt. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mei. Together they married and welcomed their first son, Grant.

Driven by a desire to build a brighter future for his family, Jie and Mei made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States in 1998 so that Jie could pursue his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). After completing graduate school in Oxford, Mississippi, they settled in Jackson, where Jie began his professional career and where their younger son, Austin, was born. Following a brief time in Memphis, Tennessee, the family eventually made their home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where they remained for many years.

Jie possessed an exceptional intellect and an unwavering commitment to learning. A gifted student from an early age, he earned admission to the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. His curiosity, determination, and work ethic followed him throughout his life and career. He began working with Skytel in Mississippi, later joined FedEx, and ultimately spent the final sixteen years of his career with Anthem. Respected for both his knowledge and his character, Jie was admired by colleagues who appreciated not only his intelligence but also his kindness, humility, and willingness to help others.

While living in Jackson, Mississippi, Jie came to know the Lord and was baptized, beginning a lifelong journey of faith. He was a devoted member of First Chinese Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, where he faithfully served as a presider, choir member, and deacon. More importantly, he lived out his faith each day through quiet acts of service and unconditional love. He was the spiritual leader of his family, leading by example and leaving a legacy of compassion, integrity, and steadfast faith.

Jie had an insatiable curiosity and a remarkable ability to master almost anything he set his mind to. He seemed to know a little about everything and approached life with both intelligence and enthusiasm. He loved automobiles and could often identify a car simply by its taillights at night. He enjoyed tackling home improvement projects, proudly renovating both bathrooms in the family home himself. He also loved to travel, experience new cultures, and share good meals with those he loved. Whether exploring a new destination, trying a new restaurant, or taking on a challenging project, Jie embraced each opportunity with joy and curiosity.

Above all else, Jie was a devoted husband, loving father, faithful friend, and humble servant of God. His quiet strength, gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family touched countless lives. His legacy will live on in the values he instilled, the faith he modeled, and the love he so freely gave. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mei Fang Zou; his two sons, Grant Zou (wife, Molly Anderson Zou) and Austin Zou; and his grandson, Parker Elliott Zou.

A service to celebrate Jie’s life may be announced at a later date.
