IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeffrey Thomas
Alther
October 21, 1961 – February 7, 2026
Memorial Gathering
Mitchells Presbyterian Church
3:00 - 5:00 pm (Eastern time)
Jeffrey Thomas Alther, 64, of Madison, VA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at his mother-in-law’s home in Culpeper. He was born on October 21, 1961, in Culpeper, VA, to the late Thomas Henry Alther and Margaret Russell (Kincer) Alther.
Jeff was a hardworking, loyal man who believed in showing up and giving his best every day. After leaving school in the 10th grade, he earned his GED and jumped straight into the workforce. He started at Culpeper Motor Corporation mowing grass and working his way into the parts department, never afraid to do whatever job was needed. After taking machinist classes, he found his place at Culpeper Machine & Supply, and it quickly became home. He stayed there for the rest of his career, doing work he truly loved. Jeff was a dedicated, dependable, and hardworking employee. He took pride in his craft and earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.
Outside of work, Jeff loved being outdoors. He enjoyed relic hunting (once finding a diamond ring at the beach), hiking, and camping, always finding peace in nature. Music was another huge part of his life, and he loved playing with many great friends and bands over the years. Those moments, filled with laughter, music, and friendship, meant everything to him.
Jeff will be remembered for his strong work ethic, easygoing nature, love of the outdoors, and the music he shared with so many.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Broyles Alther; two children, Willow Lynn Alther and Lewis Thomas Alther whom Jeff loved with all his heart and was extremely proud of; his big sisters, Sandra Brown (Mac), Karen Mills, and Marsha Rutherford (Joe); and many nieces, nephews, great niece and nephews, extended family, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Earl Mills.
A casual gathering to celebrate and honor Jeff’s life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 3 pm to 5 pm at Mitchells Presbyterian Church, 12229 Mitchell Rd, Mitchells, VA 22729.
