Janet Caroline Rice, 73, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at her home. She was born on July 7, 1952, in Charlottesville to the late Otha and Lois Woody.
Janet dedicated her life to hard work, kindness, and the people she loved. She spent 28 years with Comdial, where she was known for her reliability, strong work ethic, and steady presence. After retiring, she continued to give to her community through the Albemarle County School System, serving as a beloved lunch lady and after-school teaching assistant. The students she saw each day brought her joy, and she met each child with warmth and patience.
Janet was a modest, hardworking woman whose quiet strength defined her life. A true homebody, she found comfort in familiar routines and the place she made her own. Those who knew her best admired her fierce loyalty because once you were loved by Janet, she remained faithful and committed. At home, Janet enjoyed the simple comforts that made life sweet. She loved nothing more than kicking back and watching her favorite shows, Mountain Men and Swamp People, finding relaxation and entertainment in their rugged stories.
She met every challenge with bravery and a steadfast spirit, determined to remain independent throughout her journey. Janet’s devotion to her family and friends was unwavering, and her presence brought a sense of support and care that will be deeply missed.
Above all, Janet was a devoted mother to her son, leading by a deep belief and quiet example of how to treat everyone with fairness, acceptance, and equality.
She is survived by her loving and devoted son, Kenneth “Kenny” Rice; her sisters, Betty Sprouse (Nelson), Lynda Birckhead, and Wanda “Sissy” Morris (Tim); and many special nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, especially her dear friend, Anna Robertson, who was like family and always there for her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Rice; and her brothers, Ronnie Woody, Timothy “Timmy” Woody, and Charles (Joan) Woody.
A service to honor Janet’s life will be announced at a later date.
