Irena Helena Gutkowski

Irena Helena Gutkowski, 91, of Stanardsville, VA, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born on February 15, 1934, in Wilno (Vilnius), Russia (modern day Lithuania) to the late Henryk and Konstancja Taraszkiewicz.

Irena was born and raised in Elbląg, Poland, where she completed her education at a local liceum before attending vocational school to study seamstress work. Gifted with skill and determination, she spent much of her adult life as a seamstress and proudly owned and operated her own seamstress shoppe in Poland, a reflection of both her craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit.

Seeking new opportunities, Irena immigrated to the United States, first settling in Newark, New Jersey. Over the years, she made her home in Garfield, New Jersey, and later in Montrose, Pennsylvania, where her enterprising nature continued to shine. During this time, she owned and operated a Polish delicatessen and later ran a bed and breakfast, welcoming guests with warmth and care. Eventually, Irena moved south to Scottsville, Virginia, to be closer to her daughter and beloved grandchildren, where she spent her later years surrounded by family.

Creativity and care were woven throughout Irena’s life. As a young adult, she played the accordion, and throughout her years she found joy in knitting and sewing, talents she carried with her wherever she lived. She was an avid gardener, tending both flower beds and vegetable gardens, and delighted in browsing yard and estate sales, always on the lookout for a hidden treasure.

Irena will be remembered for her hardworking spirit, creativity, and the deep love she held for her family with qualities that defined a life well lived.

She is survived by her daughter, Eva Olszewski; her grandchildren, Natalia Olszewski (Griffin Powers) and Adam Olszewski; and her great grandson, Emilian Olszewski-Powers.

A service to honor Irena’s life will be held privately for immediate family.
