Obituary

Hunter Boyd Chapman III, 82, of Culpeper, Virginia, passed away at home on Sunday, May 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 20, 1940, in Winchester, Virginia, to the late Thomas Prince Chapman and Helen French Chapman. Hunter grew up in Woodstock, Virginia, and finished high school at Massanutten Military Academy. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1963, and three years later, earned his degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law. After his first semester at Washington and Lee, he married the love of his life, Ramona Hatcher, on January 28, 1964. Hunter served our country as a Captain in the United States Air Force for almost five years, first in Blytheville, Arkansas, and then in Tachikawa, Japan, during the Vietnam War. Their son, Hunter Boyd IV, was born in Blytheville, and their daughter, Susan Melissa, was born in Tachikawa. In 1971, Hunter returned home to Virginia with his family and began practicing law in Remington, Warrenton, and Culpeper. He loved practicing law and enjoyed the pride of "hanging his own shingle" in 1983. Hunter and Ramona worked together in that law practice throughout his more than 50 year career. As the years rolled by, their two children, along with their nine grandchildren and soon to be seven great grandchildren, created a circle of love that made for an extraordinarily satisfying life. Hunter was unfailingly optimistic and always believed the best was yet to come. He enjoyed each day and believed in the promise of tomorrow. May we all be so blessed. Hunter is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Ramona H. Chapman; his son, Hunter Boyd Chapman IV and his wife, Lisa; his daughter, Susan Melissa Chapman Furr; his sister, Helen Melissa Marks and her husband, Wayland; his grandchildren, Michelle Orndorff (Joshua), Hunter Chapman V (Katherine), Lauren Chapman, Zachary Chapman (Emma), Jacob Chapman, Lewis Chapman, Miguel Chapman, Chase Furr, and Rylee Furr; his great grandchildren, Julian, Orion, Titus, Hukmay, Eleanor, Owen, and one on the way; and numerous extended family and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Prince Chapman and John French Chapman. A private graveside service was held at Culpeper National Cemetery with Pastor Joshua Orndorff officiating, and with military honors provided by VFW Post 2524. An online guestbook is available at www.compassionatecremationva.com The family would welcome, appreciate, and treasure any stories or remembrances of Hunter that you can share. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911. www.hopva.org Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, Virginia, handled the arrangements.
