IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard John
Ellis
June 12, 1938 – March 4, 2026
Howard John Ellis, 87, of Nellysford, VA, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Hospice of the Piedmont – Hospice House in Charlottesville, VA. He was born on June 12, 1938, in Little Valley, NY, to the late Leonard and Lois Ellis.
Howard lived a life defined by curiosity, service, and a deep commitment to both his community and the wider world. A longtime resident of Nellysford, Virginia, Howard was an active and engaged member of his community. He served for many years as president of his neighborhood association and was known as a thoughtful advocate for the Blue Ridge region he loved. Among the causes he worked passionately to support was the effort to prevent a pipeline from being built across the Blue Ridge Mountains near his town, reflecting his dedication to protecting the natural beauty and integrity of the place he called home.
Before settling in Virginia, Howard spent decades in public service with the United States Department of State. His career took him across Europe and beyond, with diplomatic postings in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Greece. He lived in cities such as Madrid, Rome, Athens, and The Hague, embracing the cultures and histories of each place. His final posting was in New York City, where he served at the United Nations before retiring.
Howard had an enduring love of travel, maps, and the exploration of the world’s great historic sites. He especially cherished traveling with family and friends, sharing experiences that blended adventure, history, and discovery. His journeys took him across the globe, including memorable trips to India, Scotland, Italy, and many other destinations.
A lifelong student of history and archaeology, Howard took great joy in visiting some of the world’s most remarkable ancient sites. Among the places that inspired him were Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Pyramids of Egypt, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Mayan ruins of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, and the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. He also explored many historic and natural sites throughout the United States.
When he was not traveling or studying maps of the world, Howard enjoyed following Formula 1 racing, another reflection of his fascination with international culture and competition.
Howard will be remembered for his intellect, his sense of adventure, and his dedication to the people and places he cared about most.
He is survived by his sons, Kenneth D. Ellis (wife, Alice), Michael J. Ellis (wife, Elizabeth), and Christopher D. Ellis (wife, Kimberly); his grandchildren, Quinn Nicole Rapp-Ellis, Colin John Rapp-Ellis, and Chloe Kage Rapp-Ellis; his great grandchildren, Whitney Watson and Wade Watson; his brother, Dave Ellis (wife, Joyce); and his nephew, Marty Ellis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Faye Ellis.
