Gene Allan Mitchell

Oct 27, 1940 — Jul 15, 2026

Ruckersville, Virginia

Gene Allan Mitchell, 85, of Ruckersville, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at his home. He was born on October 27, 1940, in Longview, TX, to his late mother, Illoween Mitchell.

Gene was the kind of man you don't come across every day. If someone needed help, he was already on his way before they even had to ask. He had a heart as big as the mountains and was known for his generosity, often giving far more than anyone expected. He truly would have given the shirt off his back to help a neighbor, a friend, or even a stranger.

He believed in honest, hard work and rarely sat still for long. Whether he was building, repairing, or dreaming up his next project, Gene always found something to keep his hands busy. There wasn't much he couldn't fix, and if something was broken, everyone knew Gene was the one to call. He took pride in a job well done and found great satisfaction in helping others through the talents God had given him.

In recent years, Gene's faith became the foundation of his life. Over the last decade, he grew closer to God, finding strength, comfort, and purpose in his walk of faith. Gospel bluegrass music filled his home and his heart, and many of his happiest moments were spent listening to songs that reminded him of just that.

If you knew Gene, you knew there were a few things that were simply part of who he was. You rarely saw him without his favorite cowboy boots, and there was almost always a lottery ticket close by. Somehow, luck always seemed to find him, giving family and friends plenty of stories to share over the years.

Gene never pretended to be anything other than himself. He was quick with a joke, loved to make people laugh, and had a way of making others feel welcome. At the same time, he wasn't one to sugarcoat the truth. If you asked for his opinion, you got it….honest, direct, and straight from the heart. People respected him for his sincerity because they always knew it came from a place of love.

More than anything, Gene will be remembered for the way he lived, with hardworking hands, a giving heart, steadfast faith, and a genuine love for the people around him. His legacy is not found in the things he owned, but in the lives he touched, the kindness he freely gave, and the memories that will continue to bring smiles for generations to come.

Gene is survived by his immediate family, extended family, and many friends that loved him deeply.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 1 p.m., at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 1600 N. Main St. Madison, VA 22727.
