Ferlin Alex Roach

Ferlin Alex Roach, 67 of Free Union, VA passed away on Thursday September 3, 2026, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born on September 12, 1958, in Greene County, Virginia to the late Alex and Doris Roach.

He was a devoted husband, loving son, caring brother, and loyal friend. He valued family, friendship, and the special connections he made with others. His kindness, loyalty, sense of humor, and genuine heart will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a genuinely likeable guy who had a way of getting along with just about anyone he met.

A passionate University of Virginia sports fan, he proudly cheered for the Cavaliers and loved following UVA athletics. Whether watching a game, talking sports, or sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends, his love for the Wahoos was a special part of his life.

Ferlin was also an exceptionally talented, self-employed painter. He took great pride in his work and was known for being meticulous about every detail. He believed in doing a job the right way and took the time to make sure his work reflected the skill and craftsmanship he had developed over the years. His talent, attention to detail, and strong work ethic earned the respect and appreciation of those he worked for.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Roach; his parents, Alex Roach and Doris Roach; and two nephews, Scottie Morris and Vincent Shifflett. He is survived by his sisters Patricia Marrs (Ivoe), Kim Shifflett (Leroy), Lisa Morris (George Shifflett) and a host of nieces and nephews, and extended family, who will carry his memory in their hearts.

Ferlin believed in supporting others, often putting their needs before his own. He lovingly cared for his aunt Brenda, taking her to appointments and helping however he could. He never sought recognition; helping others was simply who he was.

The family would like to thank Stan Goodson, Wanda and Curtis Kidd, Carolyn and Neil, and Jean Borrelli for their care and friendship over the years.

His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his life leaves behind countless memories and a legacy of love. We find comfort in imagining him being reunited with those he loved.

A service to celebrate and remember Ferlin's life will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 5pm - 7pm at the Nortonsville Church of God, 1505 Simmons Gap Rd, Dyke, VA 22935.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
