Evelyn Gertrude Hammer, 92, of Elkton, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born on August 28, 1932, in Rockingham, VA, to the late, William Allen Lam and Lillian Gertrude Lam. Evelyn was a woman full of spirit and spunk, known for her bold personality and the joy she brought to those around her. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she found deep comfort and community within the walls of Faith, Hope, and Love Church. She loved the simple pleasures, especially sitting outside in the sunshine, feeling the breeze, and watching the world go by. Her favorite moments were when the family cats would find their way to her lap, purring contentedly as if they knew they were right where they belonged. Evelyn's spark never dimmed, she had a way of making people smile, of speaking her mind with a twinkle in her eye, and of finding joy in life's small, beautiful moments. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faith. She is survived by her daughters, Lillian F. Wawrzyniec (Michael Wawrzyniec), Mary Ann Beasley, and Linda Hammer (Michael Thompson); her sons, James Own Hammer (Cindy), Leroy Hammer, Charles Ray Hammer, and Joe Allen Hammer; her grandchildren, James E. Arthurs, Timothy J. Arthurs, Martha, Sarah, and Michael Beasley; her sister, Nancy Lam; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Ashby Hammer; her son, Jerry Lee Hammer; dear friend, Wilson "Woody" McDonaldson; and her siblings, William Lam, Henry Lam, Wilson Lam, Linda Hensley, Tony Morris, Tonail Morris, and Frances Davis. A graveside service at Koontz Cemetery will be held at a later date.
