Obituary

Elwood Wayne Gibson, 78, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Friday, October 3, 2025, at his residence. He was born on December 8, 1946, to the late Robert and Ethel Gibson. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to service and honor. Following his time in the military, he continued to dedicate himself to supporting fellow veterans as a past Commander of VFW Post 1827. Wayne worked for several glass companies throughout his life, including Glass & Plastics, Virginia Glass and Dodson. In the mist of his career, he also was the Manager of One Stop Auto. Beyond his devotion to country and community, Wayne had a true passion for racing. He was an avid car enthusiast who spent many exciting days at Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro, VA, behind the wheel of his beloved 1967 Mustang, known as Hard Times. His love for speed and the thrill of competition left him with countless memories and friendships in the racing community. Above all, Wayne cherished his role as a PawPaw. His greatest joy came from the time he spent with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life and the legacy he treasured most. Wayne will be remembered for his service, his adventurous spirit, and the deep love he held for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Shelby Jean Gibson; his children, Kathy Jean Gibson, and Robert Wayne Gibson (wife, Nicole Lynn); his grandchildren, Tiffany Thacker, Dakota Thacker, Cheyenne McCauley, Jodi Gibson, and RJ Gibson; his great grandchildren, Barrett, Stella, McKenzie, Rylen, Violet, Ariana and a new bundle of joy arriving soon, Chase, his siblings Sandy Gelletly, Carrol "Bumpy" Gibson, and Wade Gibson.
