Obituary

Douglas George Wahl, 68, of Troy, VA, was called to heaven on Monday, December 2, 2024 after battling a complex illness throughout the bulk of 2024. He was a devoted follower of Christ, loving husband and father, and beloved son, brother, and friend. He was best known for his servant's heart and infectious laugh. Doug received Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior through a good friend while studying at the University of Southern California (USC). Throughout his life, Doug was known for his strong faith in God and his unwavering desire to serve and honor God in all that he did. Wherever he and his family lived, Doug served in the local church they attended, often leading men's or couples' small groups. Doug grew up in Rochester, NY with his five siblings and fondly remembered spending time with his extended family on holidays and special occasions. Following completion of his AA at Monroe Community College, Doug followed his dream to study marine biology at USC. Doug's love of the ocean and marine life was enhanced by his completion of a residential program through the USC Wrigley Institute on Catalina Island. Ultimately, Doug decided that a career in marine biology would require too much time away from his family, and he elected to complete a BS in Biology from USC in 1979. Although Doug studied biology and environmental engineering in college, he launched his career in the early 1980s in the newly emerging information technology field. Doug began his career as a consultant and gradually advanced to higher levels of project management. Over the course of his career, Doug worked for various private sector corporations and consulting firms. He transitioned into Federal employment, where he spent nearly 16 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs prior to his retirement. Throughout his career, Doug made a conscious effort to choose positions that would maximize his time with his family. To fulfill Doug's love of the water, he enjoyed scuba diving, snorkeling, and watching marine life in their natural habitat - he especially loved watching sea otters swim along the Central Coast of California. Doug was passionate about deepening his walk with the Lord and enjoyed spending time with fellow believers. In his leisure time, he loved taking long bike rides, swimming with his daughters, taking scenic drives, and exercising. Doug is survived by his wife of 41 years, Tamara Gail Wahl, and their daughters, Natalie Lauren Elmore (Douglas Nathaniel Elmore) and Samantha Christine Wahl, and granddaughter Elouise Magdalene Elmore. He is also survived by his mother, Lucille Wahl of Oak Hill, VA; Gregory Wahl (Karen) of Oriskany, NY; Timothy Wahl (Anita) of Frewsburg, NY; Jeffrey Wahl of Oak Hill, VA and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his father, George N. Wahl (2017), an older brother, and a younger sister. A Celebration of Life service for Doug will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 11 a.m. at City Church in Charlottesville, VA. Gifts in Doug's honor can be made to Samaritan's Purse (https://www.samaritanspurse.org/), Doug's favorite charity. An online guestbook is available at www.compassionatecremationva.com Compassionate Cremation Services of Ruckersville, VA is handling the arrangements.
