Darrell James Hatfield, 80, of Faber, VA, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at his residence. He was born on February 28, 1946, in Guyan, WV, to the late Bernie and Georgia Hatfield.
Darrell was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was rooted in hard work, family, and quiet craftsmanship. He grew up in Coal Mountain, West Virginia, where he later married and began raising his family.
His career began in the coal mines, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep knowledge of his trade. Through determination and skill, he became a certified electrician, installing and relocating power systems within the mines and maintaining the electrical components of mining equipment, motors, and conveyor systems.
In 1981, Darrell moved his family to Castlewood, Virginia, following a work opportunity, where he continued to build both his career and a life centered on those he loved. His dedication and leadership eventually led him to the role of mining foreman. In 2000, at the age of 54, Darrell retired following a severe heart attack and stroke. After retirement, Darrell and his wife settled in Faber, Virginia, to be closer to their son and cherished grandchildren.
Outside of his work, Darrell found great joy in carpentry and woodworking, creating with his hands and taking pride in every project. Above all, he treasured time spent with his grandchildren and sons, who were the light of his life. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his craftsmanship, and his deep love for family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carrol Hatfield; his sons, Darrell J. Hatfield II and Jason A. Hatfield; his daughter-in-law, Leslie D. Hatfield; his grandchildren, Hannah R. Hatfield, Erin E. Hatfield, and Caroline A. Hatfield; and his brothers, Vernon Hatfield, Jerry Hatfield, Rex Hatfield, and Terry Hatfield.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Curley Hatfield and Tex Hatfield.
