Charles "Mike" James, 84, of Palmyra, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on July 14, 1941, in Forrest City, Arkansas, to the late Charles M. and Helen L. (Cusey) James. Mike's life began in Arkansas, but he spent most of his years in Bloomington, Illinois, where his warm personality made him a beloved figure in the community. Whether through a firm handshake, a friendly smile, or a clever sales pitch, Mike had a natural charm that made everyone feel at ease. A proud U.S. Army veteran, Mike served his country honorably and later continued his service as a Chaplain with the American Legion in Charlottesville, VA, offering spiritual support to fellow veterans. Faith was at the center of Mike's life. He was baptized at Eastview Christian Church and later became an active member of St. Patrick's Church of Merna, where he served faithfully as a lector, usher, and a sponsor and teacher in the RCIA program. He also chaired beloved community events such as the Irish Pancake Breakfast and Irish Pumpkin Festival. Mike was deeply involved in local outreach, including volunteering for United Way as a representative for Brad Barker Honda, co-chairing McLean County Right to Life, and serving as McLean County director for Angel Tree Prison Ministry, providing support and hope to families in need. Professionally, Mike worked in automotive marketing for Brad Barker Honda, where he created the well-known "Fun-Cash and Cars" campaign. He also owned and operated Mike James Used Cars and a detail shop, a business that reflected both his entrepreneurial spirit and his hands-on approach. He met the love of his life, Denise, at Barker Oldsmobile in 1978, and the two built a beautiful life together, full of faith, laughter, and devotion. Married for 42 years, they were a testament to partnership and enduring love. Mike was a passionate golfer and participated in many fundraising tournaments throughout Bloomington. After becoming a Christian, he chose to only play 9 holes on weekends to spend more time with his family, something he treasured most. He was also an avid runner, proudly collecting numerous trophies, and often reminisced about running alongside his good friend Dick Wilson. A lifelong lover of photography, Mike had an eye for beauty and moments that mattered. Above all, Mike loved his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Denise James, and his children: Marcie (Dustin) Maguire, Michael (Carolyn) James, Randy James, David (Michelle) James, and Robert (Stacy) Thorgersen. He was a proud grandfather to Adam and Dallas James; Hayden, Sydney, and Thomas James; Lexi Thorgersen; and Eleanor Maguire. He also cherished his three great-grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his brother, Clayton (Gwen) James. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Steve Kennel, Chauncey James, and Wayne James.
