Obituary

Bryant Lane Powell, 75, of Ruckersville, VA, passed away Friday, December 30, 2022 at 6:03am at UVA Health University Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. He was born October 4, 1947 in Charlottesville, the son of the late James Albert Powell, Sr. and Alice Virginia Wood Powell. He was also preceded in death by his wife and soulmate of 40 years, Brenda Lee Marshall Powell of Ruckersville, his son, Lawrence Melvin Thompson, Jr. of Ruckersville, his brother, Carroll Wade Powell of Troy, VA, and his sister, Doris Marie Powell Gardner of Keswick, VA. Survivors include his son, Bryan Michael Powell and his wife, Sara Ann Powell of Ruckersville; his daughters, Tonya Suzanne Powell Adkins of Charlotte, NC, Tracie Nicole Powell of Charleston, WV, and JoAnne Thompson Boone and her husband Danny of Ruckersville; grandchildren Brianna Michele Powell of St. Petersburg, FL, Patrick Connor Powell of Ruckersville, Hayley Nicole Adkins and Hayden Michael Adkins of Charlotte, Ethan Tyler Powell of Charleston, Matthew Thomas Boone and Brandon Lee Boone of Ruckersville, and Lawrence Melvin Thompson III; his brothers, James Albert Powell, Jr. and his wife Eunice of Waldorf, MD and Dennis Elmo Powell of Gordonsville, VA, and sister, Alma Gertrude Mills of Charlottesville, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Just after turning 19, Bryant enlisted in the U.S. Army. Just weeks into his service, a physical exam at the Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg, NC determined him unqualified for enlistment or inservice due to an internal derangement of his left knee. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1966. Bryant became a member of the Charlottesville VFW Post 1827 and the Loyal Order of the Moose in Keswick. For 42 years, Bryant, alongside his wife, proudly owned and operated a lucrative vending truck business in Washington, D.C., on which his multiple trucks he sold food or D.C. souvenirs and t-shirts. Over the years he employed each of his children, various family members, and a plethora of friends, many of whom he took into his home when they needed. An avid NASCAR fan, most especially Richard Petty, Bryant attended scores of races at over a dozen different tracks. He loved pony cars, particularly his "Crazy Cuda," and dabbled in drag car racing as a young adult. He also enjoyed playing golf at various courses on the east coast, watching baseball on tv, and cheering on his beloved Washington Commanders HTTR! In accordance with his wishes, Bryant will be cremated, and his urn will be interred with his wife at her gravesite at a later date. Details regarding the graveside ceremony will be disseminated well in advance. Compassionate Cremation Services in Ruckersville is serving the Powell family.
