Obituary

Barbara (Martinez) Briggs, of Nelson County, VA Born January 2nd, 1965 Raised in the heart of Nelson County, Barbara was known for her bright brown eyes, charming smile, and outspoken nature that could light up any room. A devoted mother from the young age of 16, Barbara's life was defined by her fierce determination to create a better world for her daughter, Marcie. At 22, she founded her own residential cleaning business-proof of her work ethic and unrelenting drive. Her strength and spirit shaped the lives of those around her. Barbara's dedication to service extended beyond her family. In the late 1980s, she and her daughter became active volunteers with the Nelson County SPCA/Humane Society, where Barbara's deep love of animals was further enriched. She later opened her home as a foster care haven for cats, embodying compassion with every pawprint she welcomed. In 1993, her hard work and dedication led to a milestone-Barbara became the first recipient of a Habitat for Humanity home in Nelson County, an achievement that reflected both her humility and hope for a brighter future. Barbara wore many hats throughout her life: business owner, mother, wife, retail worker, community volunteer. She especially found joy in her role as a photo lab technician and, as a cherished team member at CVS Pharmacy in Madison Heights. It was there that she built a sisterhood with Wendy Gardner-attending weddings, births, and family milestones side-by-side. In 2009, Barbara and her husband Mark welcomed their child Marcus into the world, a joyful addition that further filled her heart and home. Whether volunteering at school events, baking desserts for church gatherings, or crafting treasures from thrift finds, Barbara lived with generosity and grace. Despite life's challenges, including her diagnosis, Barbara remained faithful and grounded in her relationship with Christ. Her unwavering spirit continues to inspire those who knew her. On Friday, July 4th, 2025, she was lovingly released from her earthly vessel. In her passing, she found liberation, and her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who called her friend. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Marcie Martinez, her child Marcus Briggs, her husband Mark Briggs, her mother Maria Jackson, her dearest friend Wendy Gardner, and a wide circle of friends, neighbors, and extended family who loved her deeply.
