Michael Alan Obey, 62, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at his residence. He was born on February 10, 1963, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Andrew Alan Obey and Hattie Zola Harris. Michael's journey began in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent his formative years embraced by the city's rich cultural tapestry. When he was in his early teens, his mother moved the family to Chesapeake, Virginia, seeking a more tranquil lifestyle. They eventually settled in Norfolk, where Michael completed his education at Granby High School. Following graduation, Michael answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army with pride and dedication. After completing his honorable service, he returned to Norfolk and pursued higher education at Norfolk State University, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning and living life the way he wanted to live it. Life's path led Michael through various cities, including Washington, D.C., before he found his true home in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he spent his final two decades. A kind and loving soul, Michael touched countless lives with his gentle spirit and warm heart. Michael was a deeply spiritual individual whose quest for understanding led him to study various faiths extensively. His unwavering belief in God guided his actions and shaped his compassionate approach to life. His professional journey reflected his servant's heart: from his early work in kitchens to his meaningful years at the Pantops Salvation Army in Charlottesville, where he served others with genuine care and dedication. Music and literature were Michael's constant companions. He found particular joy in Funkadelic music, with artists like Bootsy Collins and Rick James providing the soundtrack to his life's most memorable moments. His love for these arts reflected his vibrant spirit and zest for life. Those who knew Michael will forever remember him as a kind and loving soul who approached life with an open mind and heart. His genuine warmth, spiritual depth, and ability to connect with others through music and conversation left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. He leaves behind his loving sister, Danielle Harris; brother, Mark Obey; nieces Rebecca Baker, Sofia Harris, and Laila Harris; and nephews, Jordan Obey, Kareem Obey, and Adam Harris, who will carry his memory in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Tjuana Obey. A private service celebrating Michael's life will be held at a later date.
