Gary Lee Spitzer

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Lee Spitzer, Ph.D., an extraordinary man of generosity and kindness. Born April 26, 1940, he passed on June 4, 2024, at the age of 84 due to mesothelioma lung cancer. Known fondly as "Papa", he held an immense love for his family. He is survived by his brother, Wayne (Betty) Spitzer and daughters, Rachel April and Abigail Spitzer (Nathan Edwards). He was an adored grandfather to Robert and Alexander Edwards, and Quinn, Kitra, and Cosette Spitzer. He also leaves behind ex-wives, Laurie Seidenberg and Susan Farma Hai, as well as his dear friend, Marnette Hatchett. Being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, he instead joined the Brethren Volunteer Service and spent one year as a "Control Patient" for the National Institute of Health studies and one year serving on a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. He then went on to acquire his Bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Master's degree from James Madison University, and Doctorate degree in Arid Lands Management from the University of Wyoming. A natural teacher, he taught Biology and Safety Concepts before pursuing his true passion as a craftsman, doing all forms of woodworking and focusing on custom made Rolltop Desks. Every piece he created is a testament to his talent and dedication to creating a legacy for his family through his work. Gary held a deep appreciation for old time blues music, any book by Tony Hillerman, and television shows like Doc Martin, Seinfeld, Frasier, and M.A.S.H. He took delight in simple pleasures like fly fishing, long naps in the sunshine, and spending cherished time with his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, it was his wish that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, a cause he cared deeply for. As we mourn the loss of a remarkable man, we celebrate the life of Papa, who touched the lives of many with his humor, wisdom, and unconditional love.
